Abu Ghraib Torture Photos

  • Ag15
The photos America doesn't want seen MORE photographs have been leaked of Iraqi citizens tortured by US soldiers at the notorious Abu Ghraib prison on the outskirts of Baghdad. Tonight the SBS Dateline program plans to broadcast about 60 previously unpublished photographs that the US Government has been fighting to keep secret in a court case with the American Civil Liberties Union. Although a US judge last year granted the union access to the photographs following a freedom-of-information request, the US Administration has appealed against the decision on the grounds their release would fuel anti-American sentiment. Some of the photos are similar to those published in 2004, others are different. They include photographs of six corpses, although the circumstances of their deaths are not clear. There are also pictures of what appear to be burns and wounds from shotgun pellets. The executive producer of Dateline, Mike Carey, said he was showing the pictures leaked to his program because it was important people understood what had happened at Abu Ghraib. Seven US guards were jailed following publication of the first batch of Abu Ghraib photographs in April 2004. Mr Carey said he could not explain why the photographs had not yet been published, as he thought it was likely that some journalists had them. "It think it's strange, maybe they think its more of the same."

US pays 30,000 Iraqi "police" to go away

The top news story out of Iraq today reports a massive suicide car bomb in Baqouba. Early reports neglected to mention that the target of the bombing was an Iraqi police station, in front of which lines of Iraqis applying for jobs as policemen had formed, but that information is now out. It is well known that guerillas have targeted the Iraqi police force for being collaborators with the occupation, but a report from Newsday reveals another reason for Iraqis to hate the NEW! Iraqi Police:

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- The Intelligence Service has its own secret prison. Criminals wear uniforms and collect police salaries. Senior security officials hand out jobs to family members. Investigators charged with being watchdogs over the police say they have little or no power. They report to the interior minister rather than to justice itself. The police arrest the innocent, beat them, and imprison them without charge; and in at least one case, police shot dead an innocent bystander.

This is not Saddam Hussein's corrupt police state. This is the new Iraq run by interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi, the man the international community is hoping will shepherd Iraqi democracy into being early next year. There are so many corrupt, violent and useless police officers in the new Iraqi police force that, according to a senior American adviser to the Iraqi police, the U.S. government is about to pay off 30,000 police officers at a cost of $60 million to the American taxpayer.

Did you get that last bit? The US government is paying 60 MILLION dollars stolen from American taxpayers for 30,000 Iraqi "police" to go away.

The staggering cost and violent results of the repeated asinine blunders committed by the clueless neocons and Bushie nation-builders in Iraq is no surprise for those who've watched this farce unfold. Could anyone read this and not feel a frisson of dread as well as anger at the hypocrisy and stupidity of the War Party?

United States occupation authorities are recruiting and training agents with the Iraqi intelligence service to help identify resistance to US forces after months of increasingly sophisticated attacks and bombings.

The employment of agents of Saddam Hussein's brutal security services underscores a growing recognition that US forces cannot alone prevent attacks like the bombing of the United Nations headquarters last week.

Authorities had stepped up recruitment over the past two weeks, a senior US official said.

"The only way you can combat terrorism is through intelligence," the senior official said. "It's the only way you're going to stop these people from doing what they're doing."

Officials are reluctant to disclose how many former agents have been recruited since the effort began. But Iraqi officials say they number anywhere from dozens to a few hundred, and US officials acknowledge that the recruitment is extensive.

OK, so now we have installed the thug Allawi in place of Saddam and recreated Saddam's Mukhbarat. Allawi is shooting people in cold blood and sending goon squads out to round up entire neighborhoods. His secret police are torturing and beating prisoners and the New! IP are shaking down Iraqis at checkpoints and working with kidnappers. What was the justification for invading Iraq again? Anybody? Is anyone still mystified as to why the guerillas would attack the Iraqi "police" so relentlessly?

The guerillas are attacking the Iraqi police because they want to return Iraq to their definition of the 14th century good life; of beheadings, theocracy, and no human rights.

I do not think time is on the guerillas' side, since every day that passes only cements the soviergnty of Iraq as elections approach (they are supposed to be due next year).

The Iraqi people will have to choose and fight for:

a) the rule of law and a democractic republic government based upon Islamic principles

OR

b) A 14th century theocracy based upon stonings and beheadings and ignorance, with no human rights, and no rule of law.

The relatively small number of insurgent attacks seems to suggest that most Iraqis may desire option A.

The insurgents and anti-democract Islamic militants may become so desperate, in the next few months, that it would not surprise me if they started to behead Iraqis simply for registering to vote or perhaps blowing up places where people go to vote, while voters were waiting in line to go inside.

qed, I just don't understand how you think American style Democracy should be pushed on anyone. Yes 14th century whatever is a stupid idea, but what you're saying is Iraq would be better off being like America... Let me tell you something. Can you imagine what this place would be like if Iraq had nukes, we didn't, and all of a sudden Iraq invaded us and told us we're going to change your backward fake-ass (non)Democratic, crooked-ass, system. ___ Think about it for a minute. Just because you like this place doesn't mean shit. I'm over here and I think it's a pile of shit. For one reason. I studied my history, and I know where I come from. I know how I got here. And it's nothing to be proud of I assure you. ___ America was a country full of Indian people. (Just like the Arabs) Who were invaded, burglarized, and murdered. YOUR Fathers did all this. They killed all those people and stole this place like a bunch of fugging pirate, barbarians. Thats what 'settlers", "pioneers", are. They are/were murderers, thieves, and baby-killers. qed, how could you promote and support thieves, murderers, and baby-killers???.. And not just the Indians. Look how many Mexicans we murdered when we stole Texas, Calif, etc......all so we could have more room to slave out 'niggers'. . . . I mean, damn qed, don't you realize youmight as well support Jeffrey Dahmer, and talk about what a great guy he was.?? . .

The stars on the American Flag each stand for aan area of land that was stolen from someone else. Thats where "the States" came from. They were stolen from someone else.. All by using "God" as a pretext. The same God that says "Thou Shalt Not Steal". "Thou Shalt Not Kill". ____ Yet, how was America 'founded'? By killing and stealing. America (just like Israel) was 'founded' by TERRORISM. Anybody that supports America needs to study their history. Only then will they realize how absolutely ridiculous they sound when they speak in favor of a country invented by a bunch of fat rich white baby-killing, genocidists from Europe.

No government or people are totally innocent; somewhere in history all governments and all peoples have prospered at the death and expense of others.

In the case of Iraq, Saddam prospered at the death and expense of his country's people. Now that the United States has removed Saddam , the Iraqis have to choose their future. The only credible way would be through the elections. The anti-democratic Islamic militants have nothing to credible to offer Iraqis, other than their view of the 14th century "Taliban" good life of theocracy, no human rights, and no rule of law.

I suppose we can say that, for the first time, a true 'arab' democracy has a good chance to arise from a dictatorship in the Middle East. Saying that the West has "pushed Western Style Democracy" onto Iraqis, seems to suggest that Iraq would had been better off with Saddam still in power.

Some people ask, "Should the West/United States interfere with Middle Eastern affairs?" My only answer is that, theocracies and dictatorships in the Middle East have not changed, while the World has changed around them. Either the World goes back to theocracies and dictatorships or the Middle East goes forward to democracy, freedom and the rule of law based upon Islamic principles.

qed, I must say you are quite the bastion of equanimity. I can see the point your're making and like I said before, I don't think 14th century headchoppings make for a good time, for anybody. I think Sharia law is about as barbaric as shit gets. Again, I truly do agree with the 'idea' of what you're saying, but I think it's a bit specious when you say, "Now they have an oppurtunity to choose their future." .. ___ Actually, they're only going to 'choose' from who we let them choose from. Just like over here. Thise whole contest is down to 2 White rich guys that are related to the Royals in jolly old England. Why?? Cause thats all they give you to choose from. And we both know that the "choices" offer the exact same thing..___ qed, I really think you and I both know that the Iraqi people won't be the ones choosing their Govt. It will be the rich guys in the US. and jolly old England that will be deciding the future of Iraq.__ I don't think we're spending 4 BILLION DOLLARS a month so that we can leave the outcome to the Iraqi people.___ Be honest qed, you know this. . (I must say though, that was your best yet.)

I think that the people of Iraq are smart enough to understand that the 4 Billion dollars of United States monetary aid will not be free, in the sense that the United States will influence how that 4 Billion dollars will be spent. I do not think the United States can directly control the Iraqi people, however, we can influence the economic outcome in Iraq by using the 4 Billion dollars to help rebuild the government and the Iraqi capitalist system and to promote the rule of law. I do not think it would be a wise move to just withdraw the 4 billion dollars and let the anti-democratic Islamic militants turn Iraqi into a Taliban-like failed state.

I think your suggestion that the United States directly controls the elections and political system in Iraq to be a putdown to the Iraqi people, in effect suggesting that they are not capable or will not be capable of running their own country despite the 4 billion dollars in aid from the United States. I think you give the United States too much credit for being able to control the thoughts and aspirations of independence and freedom of the Iraqi people.

qed, I think I'm actually stupider after having just read that. . ____ qed, I wish I could tattoo an American flag on your forehead and ship you to the Middle East.

qed- you need to get in touch with a woman named Simone Ledeen. You can find her at CPA headquarters in Baghdad. You have the answers to the problems she has been dealing with. At the very least you could end up with a cool job.
