Abu Ghraib Torture Photos

  • Ag15
The photos America doesn't want seen MORE photographs have been leaked of Iraqi citizens tortured by US soldiers at the notorious Abu Ghraib prison on the outskirts of Baghdad. Tonight the SBS Dateline program plans to broadcast about 60 previously unpublished photographs that the US Government has been fighting to keep secret in a court case with the American Civil Liberties Union. Although a US judge last year granted the union access to the photographs following a freedom-of-information request, the US Administration has appealed against the decision on the grounds their release would fuel anti-American sentiment. Some of the photos are similar to those published in 2004, others are different. They include photographs of six corpses, although the circumstances of their deaths are not clear. There are also pictures of what appear to be burns and wounds from shotgun pellets. The executive producer of Dateline, Mike Carey, said he was showing the pictures leaked to his program because it was important people understood what had happened at Abu Ghraib. Seven US guards were jailed following publication of the first batch of Abu Ghraib photographs in April 2004. Mr Carey said he could not explain why the photographs had not yet been published, as he thought it was likely that some journalists had them. "It think it's strange, maybe they think its more of the same."

Iraqi Civilian Defense Corps fights alongside insurgents in Fallujah

Buried in this WashTimes article:

Witnesses said members of the U.S.-trained Iraqi Civilian Defense Corps appeared to be helping supply fighters inside the mosque during the battle. A Pentagon official in Washington was unable to comment on the claim.

Iraqi Police in Fallujah Fight Against US Marines

Hamza Hendawi has finally decided to cover this story for the AP, pretty much reiterating what is well known already - most Iraqi police are cooperating with the insurgents. It seems likely from statements from Iraqis that almost inadvertently get reported that this is also true about Fallujah. Hendawi does include one rather humorous comment from Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff:
In Falljuah - where Marines are battling Sunni insurgents - police were conducting operations with U.S. forces, said Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. But, he said, "There are other instances where Iraqi forces have not been as aggressive."
If there are "Iraqi police" conducting operations in Fallujah, they are likely Kurdish peshmergas. Until the military news blackout is over in Fallujah, we'll just have to speculate.

All they need is the Kurds to join in and America will have successfully united Iraq.

No kidding.

Robert Fisk: "The British took three years to turn both the Sunnis and the Shias into their enemies in 1920. The Americans are achieving it in just under a year."

I am curious about exactly how many American troops have been killed and injured and how many U.S. mercs (civilian contractors using weapons) have been killed and injured?

Shouldn't those statistics be made public or is this an example of the "we don't do body counts" or is this an example of Rumsfeld not having his "metrics"?

Finally, who is going to take the role that Walter Conkrite did in Vietnam and announce on national news that "we are losing this war"?

OK, I will play Walter Cronkite.
